I don't want to spend a lot of time on the Booth family. I've found these documents: http://www.armybarmy.com/pdf/JAC_Issue_007.pdf http://revivals.arkangles.com/docs/EvangelicalRevivalsInNewZealand.odt

It's apparent to me from the War Cry article in the first that the General himself probably had not received the Spirit. My understanding is that his daughter Catherine, known as La Marechale, mentioned that she spoke in tongues and Ambassador Herbert Booth mentioned that her sons (his nephews) "have similar experiences and are all Pentecostal preachers."

It seems presumptuous to me to describe one passage from the Bible as "the exact scripture" on anything. In any case, you can't set one scripture above others. The Bible should not be read by believers as contradicting itself. The passage Jeff mentions, I think, relates to the exercise of gifts within the Church; he speaks of different parts of the body performing different functions. I notice that Corinthians 12 speaks of "diversities of tongues". All members of our assemblies speak in tongues, most after being baptised, a scriptural practice not observed by many self-styled "Christian" groups.

Thank you, Jeff, for your comments. I have amended my post as you see and will reply further as soon as I have more time. The naming of names was unnecessary and of no importance to the theme which is established by scripture.

It was also mentioned in this article that the Booth family who founded the Salvation Army spoke in tongues. I have been a minister in The Salvation Army for 17 years and have never read or heard this. In an internet search this afternoon, I found a few others who mentioned the Booths speaking in tongues but can find no historic data to back this up. Speaking in tongues as far as I know has never been a part of The Salvation Army. Speaking in tongues at the very least is definately not necessary to Sallvation but provided for spiritual edification to those that this gift is shared. The bible clearly states that the gifts of the Spirit are not given to everyone. Therefore it was never meant for every Christian believed to have the gift of speaking in tongues.

I didn't understand what you touched on about the broad and narrow ways.

It still seems pretty obvious to me (from the verses you quoted) that Christianity is the way that is "straight" and "narrow" and that people should make sure they should enter this "straight" gate because the "other" gate is the one that is "wide" and "broad" and leads to destruction.

I don't know if that's what you said, but that's how I understood that particular concept (just as you used to in your childhood?).
